YeeeHaaaa, a New Year and a lot of changes.
First big change for 2010... a whole new country.. kind of ;P ! My husband and I have been moving around for the last 4 years. My husband Grant (who is also an artist) and I are originally from Newfoundland and Labrador. We then called Halifax, Nova Scotia home for 10 years until about 4 years ago when we moved to Villingen, Germany for about a year, then Chicago, USA for about 3 years. We are finally back in Canada, and are living in Quebec City. Quebec City is like living in a whole other country with it's European charm and of course the beautiful french language (yes I am learning .. un peu ...lentement :D ). ...and lucky us, we are living in the old part of the city, beautiful old buildings, cobblestone streets, horse drawn carriages, and friendly locals.Second big news was that my work was show in American Art Collectors Nov and Dec issues, with a small write up in Dec's figurative works section:D that had a wonderful quote from Lawyer/collector Bob Buckingham, St. John's, NL ... and there will be a small write up in February issue's SOLD section which brings me to number three!

Just before Christmas Howard A. Tullman, CEO/President of Flashpoint, The Academy of Media Arts and Sciences and avid art collector (who has one of the largest contemporary realist art collections in the United States over the last 25 years) purchase two of my works from the Nov and Dec issues of American Art Collector. Soooo PROUD to be part of your collection Mr Tullman!!

... and now to start some new works, in this fabulous place, inspiring surroundings and with a mind ready to exploded with optimism and ideas :D... and wishing all the best to all of you for the coming year!! xo

"Remembering Durer" 24X30" oil on canvas

When my Husband and I were living in Germany we took a weekend and went to Zurich. While we where there the Kunsthaus Zurich was having a showing of 55 Albrecht Durer etchings. The background of this painting is of my favorite "The Sea Monster". I had made the decision to use this portrait image with the turban thinking they worked well together and then remembered the first oil painting I ever did in Grade 11 for Mr. Owen's art class. We had to pick a great master's self portrait and put our face in it.... I pick one of Rembrandt van Rijn, he had a lovely turban on! Funny how our past choices influence the present, sometimes without us even realizing.
This painting was entered in a self portrait contest at the 33 Collective Gallery, you can see the stages in my From The Studio Blog. This painting can be purchased with Paypal or most major credit cards.

"Dreaming of Dress Up" 24X30" oil on canvas

As a kid I spent many hours in my Mom's sewing room digging through the piles of fabric making dresses and turbans held together with safety pins..... dreaming of being a princess in some far off exotic land (I didn't get to see a lot of exotic things in Labrador, except for my Mukluks and Grenfell jacket). Sorry Mom for always "stuffing" the fabric back into drawers, but in my defense the memories of your piles of fabric has payed off!
You can see the stages in my From The Studio Blog.

"Admiring Mucha Study #2" 10X20 oil on canvas 2008

Just a short explanation for the name of this series for those of you who don't know Mucha, he was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist(1860 - 1939). I'm a huge fan of his works, and I say fan because if he were alive today I'd be the fan outside his studio with one of those poster board signs that say "!!I HEART MUCHA!!". I think his work is amazing, I admire his skill, sense of style and composition, and would love to see it someday in my own work. One thing you are often taught to do in art school is to do great masters studies to help you understand their work better. I didn't want to do a reproduction of his work so I decided I would look at creating some paintings loosely using some of his many wonderful illustrations that he did as a bases. I'm not sure how many of these I'll do.. but I hope that they will lead me towards doing more of my own paintings down the road that have a feeling of Mucha's style intermingled with my own.

"Alex Painting Study" 10X10" oil on gessoed paper mounted on stretched canvas 2007

Decided I needed to paint today, I thought I'd see how a painting would turn out if I only worked from a drawing, no photo reference. I think it helped me keep my painting style a little freer. I originally painted the full image, as it is in the drawing, but preferred the square cropping. Painting on Canvas paper is great in that way, allowing me to choose a cropping after the painting is done.

My studio!!!

Welcome to Studio/living room/kitchen/dining room. Which is the only reason it's kept so clean!! After I posted the photo my husband noticed that you could see all 3 of my portraits.... so I feel the need to point out that I'm not that narcissistic!! She just seems to have been the only model I had access to the past year....LOL, and She doesn't complain when I dress her up in bedsheets and table cloths!!

WORK IN PROGRESS! 30X24" oil on canvas 2007
This work in progress is a portrait study I had started back in the early summer, I dug it out a few weeks ago and have been playing with it off and on. My past painting style for portraits has usually been very realistic, very few brush strokes and a lot of glazing. What I want is more of a Rembrandt feel to my brush work... I came across a New York artist a few weeks ago and fell in love with her painting style, subject matter, composition and color palette... what more can a girl as for when trying to find someone to inspire her!! Her name is Rose Freymuth-Frazier she is a "must" to check out!! Still have a number of things to work on in this painting.. pattern the fabric, jewels, and some details I want to play with. After seeing Rose's work and wheels in my brain have been turning none stop looking for inspiration!! Can't wait to see where my new path will lead! Comments and suggestions on this piece (and anything else) are always welcomed!!

"Life Drawing Study #1" 9X12" pencil mounted on board 2007

So I finally did it I got off my butt and went to one of the open life drawing studios at the Palette and Chisel here in Chicago. My husband I went a few months back and I've been meaning to go ever since. I actually intend to get a membership, the P&C offers approximately 63 hours a week of model time at no cost to members. You can also pay for great classes and visiting-artist workshops. The monitor for the Thursday afternoon studio is a gentleman by the name of Phil Kantz who also gives classes there and has been there for 25 years. The place has a great history, it kind of reminds me of my old art college NSCAD in the historic properties in Halifax NS. Also met a few other very talented, friendly artists... I'm sure I'll be getting a membership!

Glad to know that my work is enjoyed by many ... but....
I'm very grateful that my work is enjoyed by so many people. It always does my heart good when someone emails me to let me know how much they appreciate my work and plan or hope to own some of my work or a print of my work someday. I even email other artists and let them know how much I love their work and that I have them bookmarked and have them as a link on my blog. I even refer to their paintings as reference and inspiration for my own work. Making a living as an artist is a very joyful experience... I'm so glad that I have the opportunity to do it, not a lot of people get this kind of chance in life! ... on that note I do want to say that its not an easy living. This is my little speech to remind people that an artists image can not be reproduced without written consent of the artist. When artist's reproduce another artist's work they always name it as a study of that artists work. I know the copyright laws for artists are easily manipulated.. but please show them respect. If you truly love the artists work .. buy their work or if you can't afford their work see if the artist can make a print for you, and if that's not possible just visit their blog. I've had many people email me to say that my work is their new screen saver.... that I don't mind. If you do wish to reproduce the image.. please get consent first or be willing to pay the royalty fee. Everyone deserves to have their talents respected.

"Angela and Geoff" 11X14" oil on board 2007

Available to do commissioned portraits. Just email for quotes. CLICK HERE to see the process!!
This is a painting of my brother and me. It's from an old black and white photo that was tacked up on my parents laundry room wall for as long as I can remember. When I was home last spring I took it with me thinking I would just scan it in and clean up the photo. Then I thought it would make a great gift for my parents... It was their 37th wedding anniversary on Tuesday so I painted it as a gift for them. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY MOM AND DAD!! Since I was a teenager I've done portraits.. I've been doing them ever since. It's what I first learnt to do well. I just love observing the details of a persons face, the little details that give them personality! My one main recommendation when getting a portrait painted from a photo would be pick something fun! Don't pick the standard school photo...or a staged photo ... that doesn't usually show the person's personality! Pick the photo of you and your loved one laughing and carrying on. The kids in their Halloween costume or playing on the swings or at the beach. Your teenager all dressed up for the prom having a good time...take the photo while their laughing with their friends or getting ready...get a close-up of them!! The bride and groom dancing cheek to cheek, or the baby playing with there favorite toy or when they've made a mess at meal time and have food all over their bib and face!! Your having the memory of a loved one committed to oil and canvas have fun.... enjoy it... make it memorable.

"History at Dusk " 24X90" (3-24"X30"canvas's)oil on canvas 2007

This painting is from a photo I took while living in Villingen, Germany in the Black Forest region last year. It was part of the biking /hiking trails behind our house. Just as you get to the top of the hill there is an ancient burial mound 'the Magdalenenberg' - one of the largest megalithic tombs of the Hallstattian culture (900 -500 BC)in the first panel. I got that from some a local museum (a former Franciscan Monastery in Villingen - awesome architecture and extensive displays on all periods of history). They excavated it back in the early 70s, but retained the look of the original site (except for the little bench atop its summit for visitors to rest). Next to the mound is a huge 300 yr old tree,in the middle panel.
Each of the panels make for great paintings on there own.. if you choose to separate them!

"Cherry Branch Study" 10 X 20" oil on canvas 2007

This is a different take on an older Cherry painting I did. I also documented it as I went so that I could create a slide show for you. I'll be heading back to Halifax, NS next week and will be giving a workshop while I'm there about Quick paintings. So this month I've been doing a series of these paintings and documenting them to aid in the workshop. When I get back I'll post more slide shows of works in progress.
You can view the slide show of "Cherry Branch Study" here!

"Just Peachy" 24X36" oil on canvas 2007

I'm back from my Vacation/Workshop in Halifax... LLLOOOVVVEEED every minute of it!! I'll write more about that later. Did take a grand total of 417 photos while I was there with the main purpose of daily paintings on the brain... so I'll be getting my butt in gear in the next day or so and get painting.
"Just Peachy" was the large quick study that I did for one of the workshops. It took 90 minutes to complete and was painted with 2" hog hair brushes. I did document it from beginning to end and will turn it into a slide show for you in a few days. Sorry it's not for sale.. The deal was that a student bought the canvas so the painting is hers.... enjoy Cathy!!!
I did do two oil studies of the image earlier that day (3"X9"), but they weren't dry when I packed to head back and need to be touched up before I post and put them up for sale... I'll do that tomorrow.

"Standing Tall" 60 X 30" oil on canvas 2004-05

Don't worry I have new small paintings started and hope to have them ready for posting in 1 or 2 days, but in the mean time you'll have to gander at an older piece. So today's post is an oldie , but a favorite of mine. It's actually being taken care of and watch over by a good friend back in Halifax NS, Canada. I was having a hard time deciding if I was going to sell it or not, but I feel it's time for it to find a permanent home with someone who will love it as much as I do. It's a very large painting and is actually framed (if you scroll down to my older paintings you can see it in a beautiful Black frame). It's total size is 68" x 38" (basically the size of a door, if you need a visual) and is for sale. (Frame included) SHIPPING IS ADDITIONAL. If you are interest in this piece please email me first so that we can discuss shipping options due to it's size.

"Chris's Plum's" 7X5" ink/watercolor/colorpencil mounted on board 2007

Yeahhhhh... the salvage job was a success!! An new can of gloss varnish that actually sprays, a few prayers, knocked on wood , crossed my fingers and abracadabra the frosted images came back to life.
This ones from a photo that I have painted a number of times before. The photo was taken in a field by my Grandmothers cottage in Merrigomish, Nova Scotia. The plum trees belong to Chris and Calvin who own the land... Hi .. guy's .. see you next month!

SOLD
So this one is a favorite of mine!I love to paint big and even this isn't big by my standard's(I do have a 24x90" on the way!), but it did feel good to get away from the little boards and get loose with the paint and colors! A fellow artist and good friend Shelly Mansel does these amazing landscapes that have a similar feeling and layout of the area in Germany where my husband and I lived last year. We would bike by it all the time and would refer to it as Shelly's Field when we'd go there. It felt like maybe she had already visited the area and we were biking through one of her paintings!

"Female Figure Study 1 mini" 6X4" pencil mounted on board 2007

This is the beginning of my regular figure study drawings that I'll be posting along with my paintings. I've been working on my drawing skills, getting back to the basics. As of late I've renewed my vows to be a life long student and teacher in what ever pursuits come my way.
"How quickly we forget that we must always be a student to some degree in whatever profession we choose and even in everyday life. We should never be foolish enough to believe that we have reached our maximum potential... there is always plenty to learn and we should always be humble enough and gracious enough to accept new knowledge and skills from whomever offers it and also realize that we are all teachers and students to some degree, that someone is always watching and analyzing what we do. So always be the best that we can be and know that we can be even better. When we veer off our path show "your" students that you can all pick yourself up, dust yourself off, learn from our mistakes and start back on your path again!"
Angela Hardy
Okay so I just reread what I wrote and realize that I may have gotten a little to philosophical and I'm never philosophical!! I'm the type of woman who screws up famous everyday quotes!! (All of my close friends are laughing to kill themselves right now!!) I was just going to tell you that you should check out the drawing, there will be more to come and never stop wanting to learn!! So I'm just going to go back now ... put some quotes around that and sign my name....LOL..I may never write anything that deep again..... like to savour the moment!

So this image comes from the Lewisporte area of Newfoundland, where my husband comes from. Took the photo a few years ago when we were home for a visit. LOVE Newfoundland and Labrador!! "Cherry Branch" 30 X 60" oil on canvas 2006

So you win some and you loose some....
I had been working on a series of new minis to post, but still needed another day or two to finish them. I was determined to have something new for you see today, so I took some time out from my oils to do an ink/watercolor, it looked very nice! Now I say "looked" past tense because when I went to give it a coat of gloss spray varnish the new can I bought kept clogging up. So fine no problem I say to my self...... I'll just give it a coat of my matte varnish instead!!! Well now I have a nicely "frosted" ink/watercolor. In other words no new post, but I was digging through my dusty computer archives this morning looking at some old commissions I had done. I think I may revisit this "little" Gem. I say little because it's 30X60" (the size of a door). It was done for some favorite clients of mine in Halifax just over a year and a half ago. Loved the piece and thought I might come back to it some day. So I was thinking a redo.... a lot smaller!
I would love to hear what you think.... keep it the same?... change the composition?... background?.... overall color? How would you like to see it painted?!?!? Post a comment and let me know what you think.
I'll let you know if I save the other painting:-( !!

"Sunflower" 7X5" oil on board 2007

This was a study I did while I was in Germany last year. It was actually painted on gessoed watercolor paper and then mounted on board. It was also done in water based oils...which I'm not a big fan of. When we got to Chicago one of the first things I did was go out and pick up some oil paint....ahhhh the sweet smell of linseed oil! It was from a photo series that my husband took of my hands about 2 or 3 years ago. I did a series of paintings from them (you can see those in an earlier post).
